Toyota RAV4 vs. Nissan X-Trail! The Subtle Differences Between These Japanese Mid-Size SUVs You Should Know Before Buying

The body size and interior space are the same, but there are differences in the rear seats. 

There’s almost no difference in body size between the two vehicles, with the minimum turning radius also showing little variance—5.5 meters for the RAV4 and 5.4 meters for the X-Trail. The passenger and cargo space in both vehicles are also average for mid-size SUVs. 

However, focusing on details in the rear seats reveals some noticeable differences. Both vehicles feature doors that extend down to cover the side sills, but the rear door of the X-Trail opens to nearly 90 degrees, providing easier access. 

That said, the rear seat cushion length in the X-Trail is slightly shorter, which may leave some adult passengers feeling a lack of support under their knees. While both vehicles offer reclining rear seats, the RAV4 does not include a sliding mechanism, unlike the X-Trail. 

These differences aren’t significant enough to determine a clear advantage, but it’s worth noting the subtle pros and cons each vehicle brings.

In fuel efficiency, the RAV4 comes out on top, while the X-Trail excels in a sense of refinement.

The powertrains of these two vehicles differ significantly in both displacement and configuration. The RAV4 uses the ‘THS-II’ system, which combines a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor in a coordinated control system. In contrast, the X-Trail is equipped with the ‘e-POWER’ system, where a 1.5L inline 3-cylinder engine generates electricity to drive the vehicle solely through the motor.

The X-Trail’s motor output is significantly higher than that of the RAV4. Its new engine, capable of variable compression, adjusts power generation and engine RPM precisely based on driving conditions, enhancing quietness. With its sophisticated engine and refined drive control, the X-Trail delivers a low-vibration, low-noise, and smooth driving experience that closely resembles that of an EV. While the RAV4 also offers considerable quietness and reflects motor drive force in its vehicle control, it does not quite match the pure motor drive feel of the X-Trail.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the RAV4 has a slight edge due to its lighter weight and high-efficiency hybrid system. However, when it comes to quietness and vehicle stability, the X-Trail has a distinct advantage.

Even among mid-size SUVs, their capabilities vary significantly.

While there is not a significant difference in usability between the two vehicles, the X-Trail, which utilizes the e-POWER system, excels in driving quality. Moreover, when comparing mid-range hybrid models, the X-Trail is about 160,000 yen cheaper than the RAV4.

Additionally, the X-Trail offers a three-row seating option that is not available for the RAV4, as well as the aggressive-looking ‘Extreme’ variant, which corresponds to the ‘Adventure’ grade of the RAV4.

On the other hand, the RAV4 stands out in terms of hybrid model fuel efficiency and the availability of a gasoline engine model, which is not offered for the X-Trail. The entry-level gasoline model ‘X’ of the RAV4 has a price below 3 million yen.

When comparing the ‘RAV4 Hybrid G’ and ‘X-Trail X’ grades, the differences between the two vehicles are minimal. However, when considering the entire range of grades, there is a significant disparity in pricing and applications between the RAV4 and the X-Trail. Depending on one’s requirements for a vehicle and budget, the choice between the two can vary greatly.
