Advantages and Disadvantages of 3D and 5D Car Mats

Whether a vehicle is used as a means of transportation, a utility vehicle, or a "large toy" that showcases the owner's personal taste or lifestyle, car mats provide a tangible driving and riding experience for both the owner and passengers. With the development and application of material science, the materials used for car mats have evolved from traditional fabric carpet mats and rubber mats to today's TPE polymers. TPE is a thermoplastic, eco-friendly material. After the interior space of the car is precisely measured using laser scanning, the mats are molded in one piece. Therefore, today's TPE mats are accurately sized and can perfectly replace the genuine carpet mats. If car owners have further needs regarding the foot feel or design, TPE mats can also be combined with fabric surface mat. This multi-layered composite combination is referred to in the market as "3D," "4D," "5D," and even "7D" or "9D" vehicle mats.

"D" stands for dimensional. Generally, the genuine carpet mats that come with a new car can be considered 1D. These mats are flat and do not provide side protection. When liquids such as drinks are spilled inside the car, they can easily overflow from the mats. Therefore, higher "dimensional" designs indicate that the mats can offer better side protection. "3D" mats can fully provide side protection, while "5D" mats feature an even higher and more comprehensive side design (typically the highest point being level with the height of the central console). The "7D" and "9D" mats promoted in the market go beyond side protection, mainly reflecting the craftsmanship and price positioning of the mats.
